ME&L

We are working with Groundwork and three local artists at the Whitehaven Football Club to design and create a community garden with its own sculpture trail.

Join us every Friday from 10:00 – 14:00 to help us transform the spot, make new friends, and enjoy tasty hot food.

Wear suitable shoes and warm clothing!

Schedule:

10:00 – Gardening and landscaping – led by Groundwork

12:00 – Lunch (hot, home-cooked meal made from community-grown produce provided)

12:30 – Sculpture design and building – led by Rosehill

The Sculpture Projects

Following extensive consultation, Rosehill have joined forces with Groundwork. The plan is to design a community garden with creative, exercise-inspiring and habitat-supporting elements.

These include:

Yoga Hand-and-Footprints

We will work with a yoga instructor to decide on poses that target sore muscles. We will then create images to show users of the trail how to execute the poses. These will be through painted on hand and footprints on the grass and on upright structures positioned around the space.

Dead-Hedged Running Track

Using brash and stakes, we will be constructing a visually stunning, winding, mulched path to walk, jog or run along. This will run up the length of the garden space.

Pergola and Trellis

We will construct a small pergola with trellised sides for climbing plants to mark the entrance to the garden. There will also be a beautiful hand-painted sign on this.

Football-Shaped Earthwork

We plan to shape the spoil heap into a giant football emerging from the ground, adding hexagon and pentagon shapes, which will each serve a different micro-habitat – including edible mushrooms, bug hotels, herb beds and flowers that make pollinators happy. This is our most ambitious planned piece.

Living Willow Sculptures

We plan to construct three living willow sculptures that depict abstract human shapes warming up, stretching or kicking.

Sound piece

Our artist will work with the community and volunteers to create a meditative piece to be enjoyed alongside the physical trail.

We are seeking volunteers to help us to create these works of art, which will benefit the community and the environment. If any of these mini projects interest you, please contact hannah.kessler@rosehilltheatre.co.uk or simply show up to the Whitehaven Football Club on a Friday from 10:00 if you wish to garden, or from 12:00 if you wish to be a part of the sculptural team.

Who Can Volunteer?

  • Age: Anyone 18+. Children welcome with an accompanying adult.

  • Experience: None required

  • Physical fitness: the clubhouse has step-free access, and there is lots to do for all levels of mobility. If you would like to discuss anything to do with access and inclusion in more detail, please get in touch.
